Poached pears are a simple, nourishing dessert that feels especially comforting during the cold season. Gently cooked and naturally sweetened, they offer warmth, easy digestion, and a subtle sweetness that satisfies without feeling heavy.
Poached Pears
Ingredients
2 pears, washed, cored, and quartered
Water
1/16 teaspoon sea salt
1 to 2 tablespoons barley malt or maple syrup
Aged balsamic vinegar
Optional ingredient: Poach the pears in Port wine instead of water.
Preparation
Place a small amount of water in a deep saute pan, just enough to cover the bottom.
Place pears in the pan and add a tiny pinch of sea salt. Cover and bring to a boil over a medium flame.
Lower the flame and steam for 5 minutes, then drizzle 1 tablespoon of sweetener over the top. Note that the cooking time will vary according to the ripeness, variety, and texture of the pear. Helpful note: The pear should be firm with a slight crunchy texture.
Replace the cover and give the pot a gentle shake to mix the sweetener with the cooking liquid.
Cook pears until they reach the desired texture. Gently fold to blend the flavors.
Place in a serving dish, then drizzle a little aged balsamic vinegar over the top.
